Ceramides are lipids — fats — that make up approximately 50% of your skin barrier. When the barrier is compromised, ceramides are the first thing to replenish. They don't treat a concern so much as restore the skin's ability to protect itself. Think of them as the mortar between the bricks of your skin.
The most studied ceramide in skincare. Restores the lipid barrier, locks in moisture and prevents transepidermal water loss. The foundation of every barrier-repair formula.
Works alongside Ceramide NP to reinforce the barrier. Found naturally in skin — particularly effective at preventing moisture loss in dry, cold or wind-damaged skin.
The most effective ceramide for sealing the outermost layer of skin. Critical for preventing external irritant penetration. Often combined with NP and AP for the full barrier-restoration effect.
A ceramide precursor — helps skin produce its own ceramides. Anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial. Used in treatments for eczema, acne and rosacea because it calms while it repairs.
Synthetic versions of natural ceramides — same function, often more stable in formulation. Makes effective barrier repair accessible at lower price points. Found in many budget-friendly moisturisers.
