Hyaluronic acid is sold as an instant-hydration miracle, and it can be — or it can quietly dry your skin out if you use it wrong. The difference is one simple habit most people skip.
Hyaluronic acid is a humectant that occurs naturally in skin and can hold up to 1,000 times its own weight in water. It works by drawing moisture toward itself — from the air, or from deeper layers of skin — and holding it at the surface, which is what creates that immediate plumped, dewy look.
That same moisture-pulling mechanism is the problem: in a dry climate or a heated/air-conditioned room, hyaluronic acid applied to bare, dry skin with nothing sealing it in can pull moisture out of the deeper layers of your skin instead of the air — leaving skin more dehydrated than before you applied it. The fix is simple: apply to damp skin (right after cleansing, before it fully dries) and always follow with a moisturiser or facial oil to seal it in. Never let it sit on skin uncovered.
Molecular weight changes what the molecule does. High molecular weight sits on the surface and plumps texture immediately; low molecular weight penetrates deeper for more sustained hydration.
