The chemical-vs-mineral sunscreen debate gets more attention online than almost any other skincare topic — and most of it skips the part that actually matters: reapplication beats ingredient choice every time. Here's how to pick the one you'll actually wear.
Chemical (organic) filters — avobenzone, octinoxate, homosalate, octisalate and similar — absorb UV radiation and convert it to a small amount of heat that's released from skin. Mineral (physical) filters — zinc oxide and titanium dioxide — sit on the surface of skin and reflect and scatter UV rays instead of absorbing them.
Mineral formulas are generally better tolerated by sensitive, rosacea-prone, or post-procedure skin, and they're active the moment you apply them. Their historical downside — a visible white cast — is largely fixed in modern micronized and tinted formulas, though some cast can still show on deeper skin tones with lower-quality products. Chemical formulas tend to feel thinner and sit better under makeup, with no white cast, but need about 15–20 minutes to become active after application, and a subset of chemical filters can irritate reactive skin.
SPF 30 blocks roughly 97% of UVB rays; SPF 50 blocks about 98% — the jump from 30 to 50 is much smaller than the number suggests, and there are diminishing returns past 50. Reapplication — every 2 hours in direct sun, and immediately after swimming or heavy sweating — matters more to your actual protection than which number is on the bottle.
Retinol increases photosensitivity, meaning retinol users are more vulnerable to UV damage and more likely to see pigmentation setbacks without consistent daily SPF. If retinol is in your routine, sunscreen isn't optional — it's the other half of the retinol working at all.
